Over 700 years ago, the foundation stone was laid for Schwarzenberg Castle, which is still a landmark of the town of Plettenberg today. Since a devastating fire in 1864, only the foundation walls of the defensive and residential building remain. Previously, the bailiffs living in Schwarzenberg determined the fortunes of the region for several centuries before the castle passed into the possession of the von Plettenberg family in 1661 and slowly fell into disrepair, robbed of its previous significance. A hike to the Schwarzenberg castle ruins is a must for every visitor to the town of the four valleys. The ruins with their impressive walls are an adventure in any weather and a worthwhile excursion destination.
Parts of the bakehouse, the foundations of the Drostenhaus, a circular staircase and the remains of the 13 m high keep and the 26 m deep well are still preserved from Schwarzenberg Castle. The keep tower is still a clearly visible sign of the activities at the Schwarzenberg castle ruins. It was rebuilt in 1983-87 by the local history group on the foundations still in place, based on old contemporary depictions of Burg Schwarzenberg.
