Schloss Haus Sassendorf—as castles in northern Germany are often called—is located right at the entrance to the spa gardens, somewhat hidden behind large trees . It is privately owned and therefore not open to the public.
However, Schloss Haus Sassendorf is well worth seeing even from the outside. It was built in 1785 by Franz Gottfried von Bockum, known as Dolffs zu Sassendorf, and his wife Sophie Dorothea Maria von Menge.
Von Bockum was a Prussian chamberlain and hereditary salt master, meaning he held rights to salt production in Bad Sassendorf. The gable of the house is adorned with the von Bockum-Dolffs coat of arms.
The house is a classic example of late Baroque architecture. It is axially symmetrical, meaning it is mirror-image symmetrical on the right and left. The half-timbered buildings on the castle grounds were originally farm buildings.
