Just 3 km from Winterberg, the Ruhr rises on the north-eastern slope of the Ruhrkopf (696 m) in an idyllic wooded area in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park - an admission-free natural monument and a quiet highlight in the Sauerland region. A memorial stone and a traffic circle invite you to take a break before the river begins its 219-kilometre journey to Duisburg. Two premium trails intersect here: Rothaarsteig and RuhrtalRadweg make the source the perfect stop for hikers and cyclists. Families can discover flora and fauna on the "Mountain Meadows and Springs" audio trail, while the nearby Ruhrquellenhütte offers refreshments, skiing, tobogganing and mountain carts at any time of year.
