They sought protection and economic security behind the city walls. The abandoned settlements have left their mark on the landscape in the form of terraced fields, overgrown cones of rubble and the remains of walls.

In the meadow opposite the parking lot, small hollows and elevations can be found, presumably traces of the Hilbringhusen settlement, which was abandoned by its inhabitants during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648).
