Nicolaiweg: A journey through the history of Lippstadt

Origin and early settlement
Nicolaiweg, named after the nearby Nicolai Church, was created as part of the expansion of Lippstadt in the 13th century. Initially, it was an unpaved path that was mainly used by the poorer sections of the population. Small, simple houses, known as gademe, offered widows, unmarried women, craftsmen and day laborers a roof over their heads. These gademe, first mentioned in the 14th century, were mostly owned by wealthy citizens who rented them out.

Change and development
Over time, the social composition of the residents in Nicolaiweg changed. Initially, it was mainly poor people who lived here, but in the 18th century more and more petty bourgeois moved into the small houses. This development was reinforced by the dismantling of Lippstadt's fortifications from 1763, which led to a building boom.

Nicolaiweg today
Today, Nicolaiweg is a charming urban quarter with a historic cobbled street. The small houses bear witness to the long history of the area. A walk along Nicolaiweg is like a journey into the past and offers an insight into the life of the people of Lippstadt centuries ago. Experience Lippstadt's history up close! Stroll along the idyllic Nicolaiweg and soak up the atmosphere of the old town.
