In 1820, the "Old Cemetery" was laid out on the Twiete in Freienohl. The chapel there was originally located in the Rümmecke.
The chapel in the Rümmecke was built in 1707 by the then electoral hunter Philipp Holzapfel - the mayor of Freienohl - together with his wife.
It probably stood at the point where the Rümmecker Bach stream flows into the Ruhr. It cannot be ruled out that a watchtower or similar structure may have previously stood on this site
The chapel became the property of the municipality in 1846, which moved it to the cemetery.
