This striking landmark has been a defining feature of the Berwicke district for over 800 years. Coming from Hamm, Haus Nehlen can be seen with its massive towers and stately roof.
On March 25, 1268, a citizen named Johann von Nelen was mentioned for the first time in a document. The castle complex remained in the possession of the Plettenberg family for many generations before passing to the von Boeselager family. In the 19th century, the castle was managed and operated by inspectors and tenants. The castle, built on oak piles and situated within an inner moat ring, surrounded by a further moat ring on which the farm and stable buildings stand, is a two-island complex. Now privately owned, this imposing structure is still just as worth seeing today as it was decades ago.
