During the 1820s, the brothers-in-law Johannes Dunker and Franz Maste had a brass rolling mill built. In the years that followed, foundries and other production facilities for brass goods sprang up around the rolling mill.
The founders of the factory complex used the water from the Baarbach stream to power three waterwheels for the operation.
The products manufactured in Barendorf—including household items such as irons, coffee grinders, pocket knives, and various tools—were sold internationally in the 19th century.
In the 20th century, Barendorf was home to a metal cleaning facility and a metal goods factory.
In 1980, the city of Iserlohn purchased the complex and has since been responsible for the preservation and revitalization of the historic, protected ensemble.

The Needle Museum, located in the factory village, was completely renovated and will reopen in 2025.
The industrial heritage playground brings the production of eye needles to life in a playful way.

Thanks to its unique character, the old factory village is considered one of the most significant industrial heritage sites in Südwestfalen and enjoys nationwide recognition for its diverse cultural offerings.
The historic Maste-Barendorf factory complex is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) and the WasserEisenLand network—Industrial Heritage in Südwestfalen.
