A landmark and a piece of Lippstadt's history
Lippstadt's water tower is an unmistakable landmark of the city. Built in 1901, it served as the heart of the private water supply until 1977. At 41 meters high (plus a five-meter spire), it was also Lippstadt's tallest building for a long time. Today, the tower is a reminder of times when the water supply was still a major challenge: When, after the cholera epidemic of 1850, people were looking for alternatives to the previous 539 private wells for a reliable drinking water supply and found them in the construction of the water tower.
From water supply to a stage for art
Until 1977, the water tower on Bökenförder Straße supplied the town with drinking water. It has been a listed building since 1985 and was extensively renovated in 1992. In 2013, the tower experienced a renaissance when the light art work "Columna" by Jan-Peter E.R. Sonntag was installed. The slender column of light runs through the entire tower from the inside and transforms it into a fascinating work of art.
