Kneblinghausen Roman Camp

The term "Kneblinghausen Roman Camp" refers to a fortification located about one kilometer south of the Kneblinghausen district of the city of Rüthen (Soest County) in North Rhine-Westfalen.

The site near Kneblinghausen, identified through archaeological research, has been rediscovered in its fundamental structures through scientific excavation campaigns since 1901.
These consist of two camp areas that largely overlap along their boundaries; the older camp covered approximately 10 ha, while the younger camp covered approximately 7.5 ha, and both were accessible through four gates (so-called “clavicula”—see image).
While the fortifications of the camp (rampart, V-shaped ditch, wood-and-earth wall, and gates) have been largely documented, the layout and use of the interior areas remain entirely unclear. It has been established, however, that a Germanic settlement existed here prior to the Romans, as evidenced by relevant ceramic finds.
