The inner front of the Mühlentor, also known as the Mühlenpforte, was located approximately at the intersection of Südengraben, Mühlentorstraße and Ostengraben. The passable road leading through the gate led into the Lägertal valley, where numerous wire rolls and mills were operated.
There is evidence that the town of Iserlohn, founded in the 13th century, was fortified in 1265. The town, which was extended to the north and east around 1300, was surrounded by a stone town wall. Five streets led from the market in the town center to the town gates: north to the Unna Gate, east to the Wermings Gate, southeast to the Mill Gate, south to the Church Gate and west to the West Gate. The town gates, which had lost their function, were demolished in 1798/99.
