The clearly visible Haumche hollow ways are sections of the Heidenstraße. This old long-distance route led from Cologne via Wipperfürth and on through the Sauerland via Attendorn, Elspe and Winterberg to Kassel and Leipzig. For many generations, it was used for long-distance trade, travel and as a military road.
The pronounced incisions in the terrain bear witness to its intensive use by carts and travelers. It is precisely the good preservation and clear legibility of the tracks that give the hollow ways their high cultural and historical significance.
Due to their documentary value, the Haumche hollow ways are now protected as a ground monument and are regarded as important evidence of medieval traffic and trade history.
