Historic Altstadt Hallenberg

The town was founded in 1231 and is located in the foothills of the Rothaargebirge on the two rivers Nuhne and Weife.
The town of Hallenberg has numerous architectural monuments in its districts. Of particular importance is the historic town center with its old half-timbered houses and a street layout that dates back to around 1780. The Catholic parish church of St. Heribert with its baroque interior, which dates back to the 13th century, is located in the town center. A Renaissance painting from 1558 was discovered here during restoration work. The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the south of the town was built in the 12th century as a small, vaulted room with a rectangular choir and ridge turret. Old frescoes were discovered and uncovered here in 1981 during restoration work. The listed chapel on the Kreuzberg was donated by the Mörchen brothers in 1725. The historic Petrusbrunnen fountain on the market square was built in 1756 from sandstone slabs and is adorned with a statue of St. Peter from the beginning of the 20th century.
