Franzosenkreuz refuge
59955 Winterberg
From the Züschen tourist information office, we first walk along Nuhnetalstraße in the direction of Hallenberg and after approx. 800 m we come to the Robert-Kolb-Weg marked X 6 by the Sauerland Mountain Association (SGV). At the end of the village, it leads us to the left, slightly uphill, to the "Sellerberg" refuge. From the refuge, we follow the so-called "Alte Landstraße" uphill to the left, the "Sauerländer Weg" that led from Frankfurt to Soest in the Middle Ages. The white squares lead us via "Schling" (old roadblock), Kleiner and Großer Niggenberg to the Franzosenkreuz. A French officer is said to have been killed here by his boy. Opposite the refuge is a Schnade stone erected by the Winterberg local history association together with the shooting club. It marks the boundary of the town center and the villages of Züschen and Hesborn. A little later, we cross a 1.5 m high earth wall, the remains of the medieval Landwehr of the town of Winterberg. From here, it is not far to the "Hesborn path", which we reach at a large signpost. Following the white dot, we turn left towards Winterberg and reach the "Kreuzberg", with a view of Winterberg's Altstadt. One kilometer further on we have reached the Untere Pforte.
Return: From Winterberg, you can use public transport. With the Sauerland Card, we can travel back to Züschen free of charge. Fit hikers can also walk along the old "Günninghauser Straße" (marking: green W 4), past the "Daubermühle" mill down to Züschen (approx. 7 km).
