The Eisenberg was formed around 370 million years ago by volcanic activity. Iron ore was mined in open-cast mines as early as the Middle Ages. The first documentary evidence can be found as early as 1271. Traces of mining (pings) can still be seen on the summit of the mountain today.
The area around the Philipp and Maxstollen is a beautiful hiking destination.

The Eisenberg is one of the 43 Sauerland-Seelenorte in the Sauerland-Wanderdorf, www.sauerland-wanderdoerfer.de/. You can find more useful information at www.sauerland-wanderdoerfer.de/de/Sauerland-Seelenorte/Die-43-Seelenorte/Eisenberg.

The Philippstollen is a disused ore mine tunnel that can still be visited today on guided tours.
The mouth of the disused Maxstollen ore mine tunnel is clearly visible and secured with an iron gate. It is no longer possible to enter the tunnel, but interesting panels explain the mining history of Olsberg. Benches invite you to take a break in the beautiful deciduous forest. The spring at the Maxstollen is used for Kneipp arm baths during Kneipp hikes and

the Eisenberg can be reached via the Kneipp hiking trail or the Waldroute. The Gasthof zum Schinkenwirt inn in the immediate vicinity offers refreshments
