The 18.7 hectare nature reserve "Diemelsee" was designated in the area of the tributary of the Itter at Diemelsee. It has the characteristics of a natural river valley, as the constant alternation of flooding and dry spells provides ideal living and breeding conditions for waterfowl in particular
, with coots and mallards regularly found here, as well as pochards and tufted ducks in exceptional cases and the stately goosanders in winter. The Diemelsee nature reserve is particularly important as a breeding ground for great crested grebes. In 2007, there were eleven breeding pairs here, the number of which fluctuates depending on the water level.
the common sandpiper, a representative of the waders, is one of the rarest, only irregular breeding birds in the Diemelsee Nature Park. You can recognize the starling-sized bird by its pebble-coloured upper and white underside as well as its characteristic white "shoulders". Its tail constantly bobs up and down. Its habitat is near-natural rivers, where it breeds on sparsely vegetated gravel banks, and
ornithologists have found several territories of the lesser spotted woodpecker in the willow bushes. A small colony of gray herons outside the protected area enriches the bird life of the Diemelsee. Kingfisher, black kite and even the rare black stork are feeding guests. The osprey can regularly be observed during migration in spring and fall.Arrival possible by car.
