At the heart of the climbing area is the Hillenbergwand with routes of over 50 climbing meters. In total, there are around 100 routes in the climbing area - with difficulties ranging from 3rd to 9th grade. With the wall height and the associated possibility of multi-pitch tours and the alpine ambience, the Warstein quarry is one of the outstanding climbing areas in the Sauerland and even in the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Hillenberg climbing area is divided into the following wall areas: Wästerwand, Goldgräberwand, Hillenbergwand, Essener Wand and the Brauereifels.The Hillenberg is not a pure sport climbing area. Due to the recent development and the wall height, the rock faces are more suitable for more experienced sport climbers or alpine climbers.
As blasting can take place in the neighbouring quarry during the week in the mornings, climbing is only permitted from 12 noon on weekdays from Monday to Friday. The Hillenberg is located on the grounds of the town of Warstein and the Warstein brewery, so visitors should behave considerately. This means preserving nature, not leaving any waste behind and not causing any damage.
The Hillenberg climbing area in Warstein is very conveniently located and can be easily reached from the Ruhrgebiet region with Dortmund as well as from Arnsberg, Paderborn and Bielefeld. Special thanks go to the town of Warstein and the Warsteiner brewery for their support in realizing the climbing area. The work on the rocks and setting up the routes was carried out by a team led by Heinz-Willi Hakenberg (DAV Hochsauerland) with the participation of Oliver Wolter, Christian Bigge, Volker Schulten, Christoph Mehrpohl, Karsten Althaus, Lars Leider as well as Alex Stappert, Christian Kaiser, Jan Büttner and Tobias Grothe.
