The Christophorus fountain is a gift from the honorary citizen couple Grohe to the town of Hemer. The fittings manufacturer Friedrich Grohe commissioned the sculptor Ernst Fuchs to design his garden with a fountain under the motto "Grohe has the water under control".

Ernst Fuchs chose St. Christopher (Greek: Christ bearer), who carries the Christ child safely across a river, as the motif. However, the client changed his mind and donated the fountain to the town of Hemer. The ceremonial handover, which was attended by the donor, the artist, the mayor at the time and a further 1500 spectators, took place on October 18, 1977. The fountain was placed on Hademareplatz between the indoor swimming pool and the town hall. As part of an art exhibition by the artist Ernst Fuchs, the restored Christophorus fountain was moved on September 27, 2002 and now adorns Grohe Square.

The three-part bronze sculpture shows Saint Christopher wading through the water with the Christ child in his arms in the centerpiece. It is a bronze likeness of part of the Nympheum Omega, a famous fountain in the park of the Wagner Villa in Vienna.

At the new location in front of Hemer town hall, Christophorus is actually wading through the water, as the sculpture hangs on a glass wall surrounded by water. "The redesign of the Christophorus fountain is an example of the successful combination of tradition and modernity," says Peter Körfer-Schün, former CEO of the Hemer-based company Grohe.

Ernst Fuchs
Ernst Fuchs (1930-2015) was born in Vienna. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and is a co-founder and probably the most famous representative of the "Viennese School of Fantastic Realism". Ernst Fuchs became friends with other artists such as Salvador Dali and Jean Cocteau as well as the philosopher Jean-Paul Satre. He spent a lot of time abroad, including in Paris, California and New York. In the seventies, Ernst Fuchs was mainly involved in the production of operas, for example "Parsifal" and "Die Zauberflöte" in Hamburg and "Lohengrin" in Munich. In 1972, he bought the Villa Otto Wagner in Vienna and began restoring and redesigning his newly acquired villa. He completed a large composition of paintings and opened the villa as a private museum and collection on its 100th anniversary in 1988. In 1996, his "Magic Flute" celebrated its world premiere in Vienna, Munich, Zurich, Oslo, Frankfurt and Bremen. 1998 saw the opening of the Fuchs Palast in St. Veit. The artist took part in exhibitions in Russia, Holland, Italy and Israel, among others.

Ernst Fuchs had made it his mission to develop art that makes people's living space more humane. He died in Vienna in 2015.
