The Marienkapelle on the Wilzenberg near Schmallenberg-Grafschaft was built in 1633 and extended in 1914. It is located at an altitude of 658 m and is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in the region. The first chapel in honor of Mary is documented there as early as the 15th century.
Today's chapel was donated by the Grafschaft monastery. A Way of the Cross from the late 18th century circles the hilltop. It ends at a crucifixion group with a free altar, where pilgrimage services are still celebrated today.
The 28 m high high cross is visible from afar. It replaces earlier wooden crosses and was erected in 2015 using metal with steel cables. There is a listed observation tower in the immediate vicinity.
The Wilzenberg is also an important archaeological site with the remains of two Iron Age hill forts. Information boards on site provide an insight into the history of the mountain as a place of worship, settlement and pilgrimage.
