The entire length of the Soest city wall was built in the 12th century, but was subsequently rebuilt several times and adapted to developments in weaponry and warfare over the centuries.

The original wall was partially raised in the 13th century and a total of 36 defense towers were added. The last of these to be completely preserved today is the Kattenturm tower from 1230.

In the past, the fortifications were mainly attacked with catapults, crossbows, storm ladders and so-called "Katten" (also known as cats). These were concealed positional carriages under cover of which attackers could get close to the walls and gates. The tower has probably owed its name to these since at least 1627.
