The landscape has a pronounced plateau character with only moderately hilly relief and differences in altitude of up to 50 m. In older documents, Borntosten is called "Born to Ostheim", and the village was first mentioned in a document in 822. In the 15th century, it belonged to the Canstein estate, which was transferred to Waldeck. The coat of arms shows in stylized form a spring well in the municipality, to which Borntosten owes its name
