The "Wisent Wilderness on the Rothaarsteig" provides an insight into a unique species conservation project in Western Europe. Since April 2013, bison have been living in the wild again in the Rothaargebirge - on a huge territory.
However, they are extremely rare there and can only be encountered by chance. This is why the "bison wilderness" was created as a "peephole" in the species conservation project. A second group of bison lives in a 20-hectare area that is largely left in its natural state - an extraordinary animal experience and a special natural treat for the whole family. With formations of rocks, streams, spring hollows, forest and valley, the "bison wilderness" offers hiking pleasure, a family outing and animal watching all in one go. A stream crossing and a huge badger den take visitors into the world of nature.
A three-kilometre circular trail leads through the home of the bison and allows visitors to marvel at the mighty animals up close. The tour takes two to three hours along the nature trail. Suitable, sturdy footwear and a sure footing are required.
The three-kilometre hiking trail is not suitable for visitors with limited mobility or guests with baby carriages or similar. As an alternative, there is a mostly level and paved farm track (around 600 meters long) at a reduced entrance fee. However, there is only a limited view of the grounds from here.
