Several dominions once met at the Dreiherrnstein. The striking, triangular boundary stone on the Wildborn is still a reminder of this historical interface today. Each side of the stone bears its own symbol that refers to the former balance of power.
With the reorganization at the beginning of the 19th century, the old state borders lost their political significance and were absorbed into newly created administrative units. Former territorial lines became district boundaries within the province of Westfalen. Today, the town merely marks the transition between the districts of Olpe and Siegen-Wittgenstein.
However, the region was heavily contested for many generations. There were repeated clashes, looting and acts of violence along the border. This turbulent past has left traces that can still be seen today. The border region is not only shaped by the landscape of the Rothaar ridge, but also culturally: different linguistic, cultural and religious traditions come together here, shaping the character of the region to this day.
