This inn, with its unique atmosphere, has been in operation since 1724 in the heart of the Nettetal valley. This charming old house, with its meter-thick walls of heavy rubble stone, has been home to seven generations of innkeepers and has long been a respected local gathering place, as well as the regular haunt of the prestigious Drahtzieher Guild and the former wire-reel owners, the Reidemeisters. The murals, exposed beams, and the famous climbing column tell much about the bustling activity and cheerfulness of Altena’s citizens. Even today, the Pilling Inn remains a meeting place for many clubs and regulars’ tables, as well as a popular starting point and destination for hikers and day-trippers.
