Professor Gollwitz is a provincial secondary school teacher who is plagued by financial and family worries. He has had a passion for the theater since his youth, but keeps it a secret so as not to jeopardize his authority. One day he meets theater director Striese, who happens to be in the small town. During a conversation, the theater man learns that the professor wrote the drama "The Rape of the Sabines" when he was a student and is hiding it from his wife. As Striese is always on the lookout for suitable plays and well-known authors, the quick-witted theater director finally manages to borrow the work from the author. As Mrs. Gollwitz is taking a cure for several weeks, the professor finally agrees to the premiere of his work. However, his name must not appear on the posters under any circumstances. But even before the play sees the light of day, the professor's wife unexpectedly returns from the spa and the family catastrophe takes its course.
