December 4 is the feast day of St. Barbara. In Christian tradition, St. Barbara is the patron saint of miners, electricians, cooks, carpenters and firefighters. For this reason, a Barbara mass will be celebrated again this year in the Sauerland visitor mine on Thursday, December 4. The Sauerland Visitor Mine and the Meschede-Bestwig pastoral care region cordially invite all interested parties to this mass celebration in a special atmosphere. The miners' band Meggen provides the musical accompaniment as usual.
This particularly impressive and atmospheric tradition has existed in the Sauerland visitor mine for over 20 years. The underground mass on St. Barbara's Day commemorates the Ramsbeck miners who risked their health and lives in their dangerous work in years gone by. Miners all over the world are also remembered. Even though there is no longer any active mining in Ramsbeck itself, countless men, women and children around the world still work underground in dangerous and difficult conditions.
The Holy Mass is celebrated in the largest room of the visitor mine, the tipping station, 300 meters underground. On Thursday, December 4, visitors can take the mine train into the mine free of charge from 3 pm. The church service begins at 4 pm. The event ends at around 6 pm. Please note that the temperature underground is around 10°C. There may be waiting times at the entrances and exits.
As capacity is limited, registration is strongly recommended by calling 02905-250.
Please note: The Sauerland visitor mine will be closed for the Christmas break from December 22 to 26; it will also be closed for the New Year on December 31 and January 1. From January 8 until probably March 5, 2026, extensive work will be carried out on the track system - during this time, the visitor mine will also be closed.
