NN Theater Köln tells a story of strong women, fragile men, suffering, guilt and courage. It is peppered with fascinating parallels to modern times: brutal rulers, gender (in)justice, inventiveness, longing and, above all, hope that difficult times will return to normal.
The ensemble invites us on a ten-year odyssey from Troy to Ithaca, into hellish Hades, on to Africa, criss-crossing the Mediterranean, first with many ships, then with Odysseus as the only survivor.
The audience experiences the drama in Penelope's house, where she is surrounded and harassed by countless suitors, and the story of her son Telemach, who glorifies his absent father and refuses to believe in his death. The audience also catches a glimpse of the world of the gods, in which the goddess Athena is the real string-puller of the story. So what is free will, what is destiny? Odysseus may fail as a hero, but as a human being he can be made approachable again with all his weaknesses and strengths, holding up a mirror to us and our time.
There will be an introduction to the play with Linda Keil & Lasse Schulte at 7.15 pm in the auditorium.
