Dead Finks, the long-running "post-punk" project from Berlin, are back with their fourth album - a work that retains their characteristic mix of hysterical cynicism and cutting seriousness. Their unique position in the field of tension between sarcasm and sincerity has brought them at least some attention in the underground for some time now. They occupy a peculiar niche, especially in their home city: Berlin isn't exactly known for guitar-driven music these days, and at its worst, the city seems like it can't decide whether it wants to be a giant club, a dysfunctional commune or a content farm for a venture capital-funded start-up.
But if there's one thing you can't deny the Finks, it's tenacity. And their unwavering persistence - now for an improbable fourth time - has resulted in their strongest and most accessible work to date: New Plastik Abyss, an album brimming with ideas and infused with a nervous, colorful confidence.
The driving, often raw sound of their earlier releases has been tamed somewhat by shimmering guitars, hyper-melodic vocal lines, and a greater emphasis on clarity and dynamics. In doing so, they integrate classic pop song structures, shoegazey textures and avant-garde art music into their own canon.

Restlessness as a sign of the times, but also as a motor, a movement, a mirror - that remains the principle of the band and their work. And is also reflected in the line-up: after a few changes and new band members, the formation has grown into a quintet and, with the addition of a percussionist, has intensified the restless post-punk sound of their last works, which was and is presented at joint concerts with SLEAFORD MODS, SWEEPING PROMISES, IAN SVENONIOUS, WARMDUSCHER etc., among others.
The band has a long-standing collaboration with Thomas Götz, originally drummer of BEATSTEAKS - but in his "spare time" enthusiastically running the small DIY label TOMATENPLATTEN, who was also responsible for the recording of the current 3song EP, which was again mixed by Olaf O.P.A.L. and released on MÖRTEL SOUNDS. The band is currently working on material for a new longplayer.
