We set off early in the morning - out of the city and into the countryside. The X5 starts directly at Iserlohn station and takes you step by step out of everyday life. The first highlight: the Danzturm. From the top, you have the perfect overview - like a screenshot of the Sauerland, only live. Take a deep breath, take a photo, continue.
The path meanders on towards Wixberg - a real haven of peace. No cars, no emails, just you, the forest and a pretty good vibe. At the top of the ridge, you get that feeling of freedom: wind in your face, a wide view - just what you need.
And then, as if it were staged: Burg Altena. It just stands there on its rock and looks as if it has just posed for a movie. Old walls, a rich history - and inside? The world's first youth hostel. It's kind of cool that it all started here.
Conclusion: The route from Iserlohn to Altena is not a huge challenge, but it is a real micro-adventure. Just get out, get down, experience something - and end up with a destination that is really worthwhile.
