What makes our Danish vacation guests tick

Which leisure activities are popular with the Danes? What factors play a role in their vacation decisions? These and many other questions were addressed by Sauerland tourism experts from Schmallenberg, Winterberg, Brilon, Willingen, Möhnesee and Biggesee-Listersee as part of this year's "Knowledge Day Denmark". This was organized by Sauerland Tourism together with the German National Tourist Board in order to gain further insights into the vacation behaviour of the Danes.

"In addition to the Netherlands and Belgium as the most important core markets, Denmark is becoming increasingly important as a potential market," emphasizes Julia Fust, foreign marketing employee at Sauerland Tourism. This is also confirmed by the number of overnight stays last year. The Sauerland already recorded 3,826 guest arrivals with 13,977 overnight stays for the first half of 2023. This makes our northern neighbors the third largest foreign market, and the trend is rising.

"We are currently trying to make the Sauerland brand known in Denmark through cooperation and targeted marketing measures and to convince potential holidaymakers of the special features of our region," continues Fust. Of course, this is only possible with the necessary knowledge about the Danes and their vacation preferences. "We are therefore all the more pleased to be able to offer a joint Knowledge Day for our tourism professionals together with the German National Tourist Board (GNTB)." The tourism association welcomed Bo Schou Lauridsen, head of the GNTB's foreign representation in Copenhagen, to the Südwestfalen Music Education Center in Bad Fredeburg.

He had prepared exciting insights into the travel behavior of the Danes in his presentation to create an initial introduction for the participants. Additional input was provided by Danish travel journalist Annie Vibeke, who had already visited the Sauerland as part of previous marketing measures and described her impressions of the region, before the rest of the workshop focused on the further development of the existing strategy and the future market development was worked out in more concrete terms.
