Anyone who experiences science up close—who can explore amazing phenomena with their own hands, eyes, and ears, and conduct experiments on their own—will quickly become an inventor. That’s exactly what the Phänomenta in Lüdenscheid, which aims to inspire young and old alike with the amazing world of physics. At 180 stations, there’s plenty to touch, try out for yourself, and marvel at—whether it’s the walk-in mirror, the hand-powered battery, or the infinite musical scale.

Exploring and discovering new things works up an appetite—so head into downtown, which is just a few steps away. The pedestrian zone offers a wide variety of places to stop and enjoy a meal, whether in the modern, spacious squares or in the winding alleys of the Old Town. In numerous specialty stores and at the Stern-Center, with its more than 100 attractive and modern shops, you’ll enjoy shopping with friendly and knowledgeable assistance amid a tempting variety of goods all year round. A weekly market takes place on Rathausplatz on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

If you’d like to enjoy the relaxing outdoors after or instead of a stroll through the city center, head to the Versetal Reservoir. From the Lüdenscheid train station, take BUS 54 toward Grünestraße ZOB, Plettenberg, and you’ll reach the Versetal Reservoir in 17 minutes without having to transfer.

Or you can drive south, past the Lüdenscheid-Süd highway exit toward Herscheid. At the next fork in the road, turn right and follow the banks of the Verse River to the parking lot in front of the Klamer Bridge. To the right of the bridge is our top tip for kids: the KNAX Nature Trail at Hokühler Bay on the Versetal Reservoir (a 40-minute walk from the bus stop). There’s plenty to discover here. You’ll encounter musical wood, aquatic animals that build homes, and trees that tell stories. Nine stations along the 1.9-km circular trail around the bay invite you to make exciting and interesting discoveries that engage all the senses.

Traveling by Bus and Train

Lüdenscheid Station is served by two different rail lines. Trains on the RB 52 line from Dortmund and Hagen arrive in Lüdenscheid every hour. Trains on the RB 25 line from Cologne, Gummersbach, and Meinerzhagen arrive in Lüdenscheid every two hours.

From Lüdenscheid Station, visitors can see PHÄNOMENTA and reach the interactive museum on foot in about five minutes.
