A beautiful, idyllic loop that has been assessed in terms of both exercise physiology and bioclimatology:

Directions
We start at the Haus des Gastes in the mountain village of Altastenberg and follow the As1 trail marker westward, past the entrance to the Disc Golf Park and the Hotel Der schöne Asten. We turn right and head downhill into the Renau Valley through a sparse forest that invites you to linger, all the way to the Renauwiese. Here, we follow the narrow path over steps and footbridges until we head steeply uphill again along the forest nature trail to the Nordhang ski lift. From there, we walk westward back to our starting point in Altastenberg.

From Winterberg and Schmallenberg via the S40 bus—get off at Astenstraße Altastenberg
In Winterberg, you can board the S40 bus right at the train station.
If you’re coming from downtown, the Pforte and Hohler Seifen stops are convenient.
How to get there
Coming from Winterberg:
Take the B480 toward Altastenberg and continue on the Hochsauerland Höhenstraße and Astenstraße.
Coming from Schmallenberg, Oberkirchen, or Nordenau, take the L640 and turn left onto Astenstraße.
