You will learn about the history of the Wagener charcoal-burning family, the structure and function of a charcoal pile, the Hauberg and the history of charcoal on numerous display boards. The charcoal burner's tools and technical terms used in charcoal burning are also clearly explained.

The start and finish of this circular walk is the "Köhlerplatz" nature park parking lot on the L719 above Walpersdorf. It leads past a charcoal pile site into the Siegtal valley, further into a side valley and to another charcoal burner site with a Köhlerhütte. Passing the outskirts of Walpersdorf, the trail leads through the forest back to the starting point.

The charcoal burner trail is marked with the A1 sign. Wooden signposts at some crossroads also show you the way. The charcoal burner quiz provides entertainment during the tour. This is available directly at the first information board on the charcoal burners' trail. The trail is suitable for children aged 6 and over. Due to the natural nature of the trail, an all-terrain baby carriage is recommended.

Directions

Directly opposite the entrance to the hiking parking lot is the first information board on the charcoal burner trail. Here you will receive the charcoal burner quiz and a piece of charcoal to write on. Walk down the path into the small hollow, across the playground and follow the gravel path at the top. After just a few meters, you will see the Meilerplatz on the right-hand side. At the end of the gravel path, cross the main road L719, keep slightly to the right and follow the path through the meadow. After 100 m, turn right and walk along the edge of the forest until the landscape opens up again. After 800 m, you reach a tarred path where you turn left briefly to read the next information board on the history of the Patschoß deserted settlement. Then follow the tarred path in the direction you came from. Turn left at the T-junction and keep right again at the next fork. Shortly afterwards, keep left and take the right fork again. The path now leads you along the edge of the Hauberge. Keep left at the next two forks in quick succession. After 500 m you reach a large fork. Follow the gravel path on the right and head straight for a cozy rest area right by the stream. In the clearing to the left, there is a second pile-raising site and a Köhlerhütte. At the next forks, always follow the path, which now leads you along above the valley. After 300 m, the path changes to asphalt. You walk slightly downhill and after another 200 m, take a sharp right. You follow the path through a short section of forest and then enter open meadows. You walk along a sheep and goat pasture and at the end, keep left twice at the forks until you reach asphalt again. The path takes you past the sawmill. Keep right at the main road and cross it after 200 m. Follow the road at Schieferstein through the residential area and take the right-hand path after 300 m at the bend. At the end of the development, the road turns into a farm track and you now enter a Buchenwald. At the next junction, follow the path to the right. After 100 m, continue along the left-hand path and turn left at the next junction. After 100 m, you reach another wider farm track at a T-junction. Turn right here and follow the path. After 900 m, keep right at the fork and pass a barrier. The path now leads you slowly out of the forest and you can see the meadows above the charcoal pile. At the next crossroads, take the meadow path on the right. After 100 m, follow the left-hand path at the crossroads past the last information board down to the "Köhlerplatz" parking lot.
