Wildenberg Castle

Wildenberg Castle dominates the historic center of Brunskappel and bears witness to the long history of the Negertal valley. Around 1300, Vogt Edelherr Widekind I von Grafschaft had Wildenberg Castle built for his second wife, Adelheid. Since then, the estate has seen many chapters in its history: it changed hands several times, burned down around 1900, and was rebuilt that same year. Even in more recent times, Wildenberg Castle has remained a significant site. In 1984, Ernst-Georg Schaefer-Wildenberg sold his 284-hectare estate to the Ruhrtalsperrenverein in Essen. Since 2011, the so-called “castle” has once again been in private ownership. Its historical significance is underscored by its inclusion on the City of Olsberg’s list of historic monuments on October 16, 1985. Situated in the half-timbered village of Brunskappel, Wildenberg Castle blends harmoniously into surroundings characterized by historic houses, a village church, and lush green countryside. The private estate is particularly eye-catching from the outside and lends the village a special, almost fairy-tale-like atmosphere.
