The Spieker

The Spieker is one of the oldest buildings in the municipality of Herscheid. The complex consists of a rubble-stone house dating from the 15th/16th century and a significantly younger half-timbered house with an attached stable. In earlier times, the building was used to store the produce that had to be paid to the church.

The Spieker through the centuries:

• In 1686, it burned down to its rubble-stone walls during a village fire.
• In 1759, the church estate was owned by Peter Pollmann.
• In 1794, the Alberts family acquired half of the Spieker estate.
• In 1820, the current half-timbered building with a horse stable was erected on the old foundation.
• In 1822, Joh. Died. Alberts acquired the second half of the Spieker estate.
• Until 1884, it served as an inn, farm, and haulage business.
• Before World War II, the Spieker housed a wool and linen store.
• In 1984, the building was designated a historic landmark.
• In 2005, the Spieker became the property of the municipality of Herscheid.
• In 2006, the local history museum was established in the Spieker, alongside the library and the wedding chapel.
• In 2009, the local history museum was officially opened following renovation work.

The lovingly furnished rooms of the Spieker house many exhibits from days gone by. Household appliances, furnishings, tools, pictures, and much more invite visitors on a journey into the past.
