St. Thomas Church in Rhena is one of the oldest places of worship in the Waldeck region. Dedicated to the Apostle Thomas, the church was built in 1120 in the Late Romanesque style by the Lords of Rhena. Cast-iron tombstones of the von Rhena family can be seen in the choir. Remains of this noble family’s moated castle are still visible today at an old farmhouse in the village. The last noble residence is the villa in the park next to the church, which is now privately owned.

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1231. Rhena has been a parish since 1240. With the Reformation in 1540, St. Thomas Church became a Protestant parish church. The Vorhalle beneath the tower has been preserved in its medieval form.
Particularly noteworthy are the 19th-century painting of the Last Supper and the 20th-century depiction of the Flight into Egypt. The Romanesque baptismal font is 800 years old, and the 14th-century altar with its crucifix forms the focal point of the church.
