The Canstein area has been inhabited for a long time, as evidenced by Canstein Castle, which dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries. St. Laurentius Chapel has also long been a part of the village landscape.
The building was constructed between 1834 and 1837 as a Neoclassical hall church with a wooden ceiling and a 3/6 apse. The hipped gable of the west facade is crowned with a cubic ridge turret. The interior is decorated in a fairly uniform Biedermeier style. The building is stuccoed and structured with wide corner pilasters made of cut stone.
