The Catholic parish in Bad Sassendorf was approved on April 9, 1862 by the Vicariate General of the Archdiocese of Paderborn due to the efforts of the then Provost Johann Eberhard Nübel. The foundation stone for the church, school and dwelling was laid on May 26, 1862. The St. Bonifatius Chapel was consecrated by Bishop Konrad Martin on August 13, 1863. It had the form of a single-nave, flat-roofed room with a three-eighths end made of local green sandstone and three pointed arched windows on each side without tracery. A pointed, octagonal ridge turret crowned the whole.

The church was further extended in 1938. A choir room was added for the altar. In 1939, the rebuilt church was consecrated again by the Paderborn Auxiliary Bishop Augustinus Baumann. Extensive new building work was carried out at the beginning of the 1980s. All buildings - apart from the church tower - were demolished to make way for the new community center. The new St. Bonifatius Church was consecrated in July 1981 by the Auxiliary Bishop of Paderborn, Dr. Paul Nordhues
