St. Bonifatius Catholic Church, Bad Sassendorf

The Catholic parish in Bad Sassendorf was approved on April 9, 1862, by the Vicar General’s Office of the Archdiocese of Paderborn, thanks to the efforts of the then-provost, Johann Eberhard Nübel.

On May 26, 1862, the cornerstone was laid for the church, school, and residence. St. Bonifatius Chapel was consecrated on August 13, 1863, by Bishop Konrad Martin.

It was a single-nave, flat-roofed structure with a three-eighths apse made of local green sandstone and three pointed-arch windows without tracery on each side. A pointed, octagonal ridge turret crowned the structure.

In 1938, the church underwent further expansion. A chancel for the altar was added. In 1939, the church, now remodeled, was reconsecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Augustinus Baumann of Paderborn.

In the early 1980s, extensive new construction was carried out. All structures—except for the church tower—were demolished to make room for the new parish center. The new St. Bonifatius Church was consecrated in July 1981 by Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Paul Nordhues of Paderborn.

Services are held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. and on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.
