St. Albanus and Cyriacus Church, Welver

The church was probably built in the 12th century as a private chapel for the Lords of Welver. Around 1240, a Cistercian convent was founded there.

Properties:
The formerly small church building was expanded upward, and a large tower and a transept were added. From then on, the Romanesque church served as a monastery church. With the Reformation in Soest, a Protestant assistant pastor was initially appointed. The building then served as a Simultaneum for over a hundred years. Catholic Mass was celebrated in the nuns’ gallery while services of the “new” faith were held downstairs. After the nuns built a new Baroque church right next door around 1700, the church was used exclusively by the Protestant congregation.
Noteworthy:
From 1728 to 1775, Johann Theodor Melchior Brockhaus served as pastor of the Protestant congregation. He was the “grandfather” of the publishing house founder Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus.
