Not far from Schmallenberg lies the mountain village of Schanze at an elevation of 720 meters. Schanze is located slightly west of the summit of the Rothaar Ridge—the main ridge of the Rothaar Mountains. Whether you’re taking a stroll, a day hike, or a multi-stage hike—whether in hiking boots or on the cross-country ski trail—Schanze offers a wide variety of options thanks to its network of trails, including: - the Kyrill Trail —accessible to all on the shorter route—hikes along the Forest Sculpture Trail—a hike from Schanze to Jagdhaus—hikes to the surrounding Schmallenberg villages such as Oberkirchen, Grafschaft, Latrop, or toward Kahler Asten, as well as into the Schmallenberger Land. Worth seeing are the earthen ramparts still standing near Schanze, which served as roadblocks for the medieval Landwehr. In addition, just before reaching Schanze, you can take a break at the wading pool—and for the little ones, the playground in the center of town offers plenty of fun and games.
