Due to the rapid population growth, the water from the springs was no longer sufficient. For this reason, a well was dug in a central location in the city. It seems that no one considered—or perhaps was unaware—that they would have to dig nearly 30 meters through the limestone layer deposited by the Zechstein Sea during the Permian period. This was arduous work with the tools available at the time.
