A polarizing filter is a useful tool for landscape photographers (see Station 3). When used correctly, it eliminates reflections. And not just on bodies of water—reflections also occur on the shiny surfaces of leaves and moss, as well as on small water droplets in the forest. A polarizing filter can eliminate these as well.
Over the next kilometer, you’ll find plenty of subjects featuring moss and rocks. If you have a polarizing filter with you, try using it on these subjects.
A polarizing filter is usually screwed into the lens’s filter thread from the front. For cell phones or point-and-shoot cameras, simply hold the filter in front of the lens. When you look through the camera at plants and moss in the forest with the filter screwed on, you can rotate the polarizing filter. You’ll find a position where all the shades of green in the forest appear particularly intense. If the leaves and moss in the forest are damp, the effect is especially noticeable.
Assignment:
The forest is inhabited by all kinds of mythical creatures—can you spot them? Pay attention to the textures of wood, moss, and rocks, and capture the faces and figures of these mythical creatures in your photos. Photograph them at eye level, as if they were living beings.
