Like most Catholic churches in the Sauerland region, the parish church of St. Gertrudis in Oberkirchen is open during the day and can be visited free of charge. It goes without saying that you should follow a few simple rules:
- Be careful not to disturb other visitors.
- Turn off your camera’s flash and do not use an external flash unit. Frequent use of flash can damage the old paintings and their colors.
There are also a few simple photography tips:
- Don’t just photograph the overall view. Pay attention to the details.
- If you’re taking a wide-angle shot: Make sure the image is either perfectly symmetrical or completely asymmetrical. A slightly skewed view of the altar can be distracting.
- Even on bright days, it’s surprisingly dark inside the church. If you don’t have a tripod with you, prop up your camera. Otherwise, your photos will come out blurry. The backs of the church pews aren’t the only places you can rest your camera. You can also place the camera on the floor in the center aisle. This also creates an unusual perspective.
Task:
The residents of Oberkirchen place great importance on the design of their homes and gardens. Take a moment to notice the lovingly crafted details. Often, there are some very humorous ones among them.
