The Nikolaikirche is an early Gothic structure and contains so many intricate details and treasures that only a general overview can be provided here.
The church was built between 1229 and 1247. With the exception of the tower and the staircase, it has been preserved in its original form.

This gem of Early Gothic architecture, as it is also known in art history, clearly shows that construction began on the eastern side with its transitional forms between the Romanesque and Gothic styles, and then allows the Gothic forms to emerge more and more distinctly.
The choir with its smooth-finished end wall, the two-bay-high hall church, and the polygonal tower section together form the church interior. The south side is also the façade and is therefore designed more magnificently in many details than the north side. The south portal is particularly striking, displaying all the characteristics of the transitional style. Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of citizens and merchants, is enthroned in the tympanum.
Overall, the church was constructed—both externally and internally—in the styles of the transitional period and Early Gothic. Artfully designed individual elements and balanced spatial proportions create an artistic unity rarely achieved, stemming from the faith of that era and still serving to glorify God in a special way today.
