“Around the Luisenhütte”
The “Around theLuisenhütte” loop trail is a nature-oriented and varied hike for families. Along the 8.8 km route, hikers will encounter significant sights in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park.
The starting point is the Luisenhütte Wocklum, a fully preserved smelting complex—unique in Germany—featuring a blast furnace and an iron foundry. The historical complex is complemented by the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in the town of Balve.
After crossing the charming village of Mellen, you’ll reach the Orlebachtal, a protected nature reserve. Here, you’ll find unique animal and plant species such as the kingfisher, the blue-tailed damselfly, and watercress. Passing by Schloss Wocklum, you’ll finally reach the Balver Höhle—Europe’s largest man-made cave—on the outskirts of Balve.
