The Listertalsperre offers a wide range of recreational activities. In addition to sailing, fishing, surfing, and swimming, the area is particularly popular with hikers, walkers, and cyclists. Around the lake, well-maintained trails, numerous benches, and several forest "sofas" provide opportunities for relaxing breaks with views of the water and the surrounding landscape.

The Listertalsperre is operated by the Ruhrverband. Fishing licenses are available directly from the Ruhrverband as well as from the Biggesee-Listersee Tourism Association.

Swimming is permitted only at the designated swimming areas.
Due to the high risk of wildfires, barbecuing and lighting campfires in the forests surrounding the reservoir—especially during the summer months—are strictly prohibited.
