Welver was first mentioned in a historical document here in 1179. Around 1240, the Cistercian nuns founded the convent. The village went through a turbulent period, particularly during the Reformation. The history of the two churches standing side by side is also fascinating.

The former monastic village of Kirchwelver is a highly significant historical example of settlement development. The Romanesque church, likely built in the 10th or 11th century, was expanded by the Cistercian nuns in 1240 and given a tower. It served as a convent church. For more than 100 years, it was used as a “simultaneum” by both the Reformed congregation and the Catholic convent. In 1700, the nuns consecrated a new Baroque convent church. Today, it serves as the Catholic parish church. The picturesque monastery village, with its old monastery buildings, ponds, craftsmen’s houses, and a moat system that is now only partially preserved, constitutes a unique complex in the Westfalen region. Particularly noteworthy is the Heimathaus located in the monastery’s former bakery and brewery. Spanning over 600 square meters, it houses the largest local history collection in the Niederbörde region!
In 2011, Kirchwelver won first place in the “Our Village Has a Future” competition among the small villages in the Soest district.
