A tour of the bunker?
According to eyewitness accounts, the tunnel bunker in Propsteiberg was built in the fall and winter of 1943–44 by the local construction company Beele using forced laborers and was intended to provide shelter for about 400 people.
The construction was a response to the increasing Allied air raids, during which Belecke—as a site for the arms industry and a railroad hub—was a potential target.
The accessible portion of the bunker has a total length of 127.1 m. The length in the east-west direction is 87.7 m, and the length in the north-south direction is 39.4 m. The bunker has a total area of 239.2 square meters and a total volume of 445 cubic meters. These dimensions roughly correspond to the specifications in the “Regulation on the Construction of Air-Raid Shelters” dated September 17, 1943.
