Grimme Museum in Assinghausen

Friedrich Wilhelm Grimme (1827–1887) was a German
writer, teacher, and regional poet. Because of his
works on culture and folklore, he is considered the “inventor of the Sauerland.” In the
19th century, he was the most widely published
dialect poet in Westfalen. He was also active as a composer,
natural scientist, and Low German playwright, and wrote
significant Standard German poetry as well, though it initially met with little response.
It was not until after his death that Grimme received the long-awaited recognition for his
Standard German poetry.
The collection in the Grimme Room, located in the former
Assinghausen elementary school building, keeps the memory of the
Sauerland poet alive. On display are original manuscripts and
letters, early printed editions, commemorative publications, pictures of Grimme and of
Grimme celebrations, and much more.
