The Eisenberg was formed approximately 370 million years ago by volcanic activity. Iron ore was already being mined in open-pit mines as early as the Middle Ages. The first documented evidence dates back to 1271. Traces of the mining (Pingen) can still be seen today at the summit of the mountain.
The area around the Philipp and Maxstollen is a beautiful hiking destination.

The Philippstollen is a disused ore mine tunnel that can still be visited today on guided tours.
The entrance to the abandoned Maxstollen ore mine is clearly visible and secured with an iron gate. Although visitors can no longer enter the tunnel, informative signs explain the history of mining in Olsberg. Benches in the beautiful deciduous forest invite visitors to take a break. The spring at the Maxstollen is used during Kneipp hikes for arm dousing according to the Kneipp method.

The Eisenberg can be reached via the Kneipp Hiking Trail or the Waldroute. The Gasthof zum Schinkenwirt, located in the immediate vicinity, offers places to stop for refreshments.

Directions by Car From the north: Take the A33 to the Wünnenberg-Haaren interchange, then take the B480 to Brilon and Olsberg. From the south: Take the A44 to the Marsberg exit, then take the B7 to Brilon and Olsberg. From the west: Take the A44 to the Werl interchange, then take the A46 to Olsberg From the east: Take the A44 to the Marsberg exit, then take the B7 to Brilon and Olsberg Traveling by Train Brilon and Olsberg are located on the Sauerland Express route (RE 17 Hagen–Warburg/Kassel) and are therefore easily accessible from the Ruhrgebiet. In addition, the Dortmund-Sauerland Express (RE 57 Dortmund–Winterberg) offers a regular direct connection to Bigge-Olsberg. There is also a direct connection from Dortmund and Korbach to Brilon.
